As the world re-opens all eyes are on the hotel industry as the segment most likely to see an early recovery in travel. Yet hoteliers need to use their crystal ball and “thumb in the wind” to manage costs, find new revenue streams, and work with a drastically reduced team through the ramp up phase.


Here are three tips on how to balance the tension between low occupancy while delivering a high quality guest experience:

To ensure that guests feel safe, many hotels are reopening with PPE welcome kits or masks and sterilizers on hand. There’s no sure way of knowing how this will be received or how long it will last. However, what we do know for sure is that the demand for these items will extend well beyond the guest's stay. For example, recently TSA increased the amount of sanitizing hand gel that can be carried onboard an aircraft. Travelers are expected to take extended road trips where bulk size sanitizers and wipes will become a standard in every car. However, while adding masks and sanitizers is important for guest health and peace of mind, the cost can be overwhelming when occupancies are still at an all-time low.

In a recent survey on labor levels by Hotel Effectiveness, as of May 17th US hotels had brought back 34% of their staff, with on average 9.1 employees per hotel. However, zero percent of those employees were in the food and beverage area.

Not only does this put food and beverage customer experience at a disadvantage, but the wide range of duties conducted by these team members including purchasing falls also to those left manning the fort.
